With many things in life, if you don’t get it right the first time, you can give it another shot without serious repercussions.  With dog training, though, that is not the case.  As a Denver dog trainer, I see many examples of dog training gone wrong, so beware when you are choosing someone to work with your dog.  Recently, I have been working with a 4-year-old dog whose first experience with a trainer was very traumatic.  That trainer used several of the methods that A Wagging Success is trying to put an end to, one being throwing things that make noise near the dog when the dog makes a “mistake.”  This beautiful dog spent three hours hiding under the porch after his first session with this negative training.  I certainly don’t blame the dog’s owners.  They chose a company many people work with.  The problem is that most people don’t understand how damaging training methods that use pain or fear can be to a dog.  These methods must stop!  I now have my work cut out for me in gaining the dog’s trust and teaching him that he will never again be treated that way, especially during training.  Thank goodness I have loving, effective, gentle techniques I can use with him.  I know he will be successful in no time.  Heidi – Head Trainer

Do you want a dog you can take anywhere? Do you want to do off-leash hiking? Do you want to prevent bad manners and aggression in your dog?  Then you should start with puppy classes that are taught by a professional behavior counselor and dog trainer in Denver.  Ask your trainer to see what credentials their dogs have (please go to Media coverage on my website at awaggingsuccess.com).  Do they bring their dog to class to demonstrate? My dogs also have several titles in AKC agility not shown on the media page. I would never work with a trainer unless I saw what skills their personal dog has.  Does the trainer you are considering even own a dog? Is this a summer job for the trainer or is it a career in dog training? Does your trainer’s program include an orientation first without the dogs so you have time to work on focusing your dog’s attention on you before you start classes? Or are you just thrown into a group of puppies the first night and you don’t have the skills to have your dog focus on you in high distractions?  How will you or your dog learn? Our first night is an orientation with you and I give you one week to work on attention with your puppy or dog. You would not believe our first night with the class, all dogs are quiet, complete eye contact on their owners and could care less about the other pups (until play time, that is!). Too good to be true?  Not so! That’s why multiple trainers and Animal Planet have observed and filmed my classes. Do you see this beautiful child on this blog ? She belongs to one of my clients whose puppy I trained using my “SPECIAL TECHNIQUES” !!! Now would you have a trainer come in and put a shock collar on that puppy and every time the puppy made a mistake, it would get an electric shock and yelp in pain?  Do you realize when an animal feels pain he will associate it with whomever is in his view and could associate it with your child?  As a Denver dog trainer, this is not how I want my children to treat an animal. If you had a job at the zoo, would you go into the enclosure of a tiger to train him and use a shock collar?  I’ve worked with other trainers of different species and they are appalled. If they even give a verbal correction, their life is in danger. Before you sign up with a Denver dog trainer, make sure the trainer owns a dog that is extremely well trained!!
